"Ritual" re-imagines the notion of site-specificity within the mediated landscape. A physical location has gone through multiple transformations. The exhibition transforms the location of desert, to an iron mine, to a prison, to a film shoot location for hire, to apocalyptic concept art, to game an engine demo and finally to a downloadable 3D environment. With every step of this transformation, the artifacts of the process become inscribed as scars in the landscape. Within this environment, Triantafyllidis intervenes with an ecosystem of new inhabitants, including a couple of mean hyenas, racing crows on Bird™ scooters and an ant colony. The elements are set free to roam and respond to this fabricated landscape.
The series of new works, including a live simulation, sculptures in multiple scales, an interactive headset and two woven tapestries are then taken onto an expedition and documented in the environment that generated them. Similar to fragments from a mysterious narrative, the sculptural works are extending the world of Ritual, the live simulation, back into the physical location, blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction. Like a mysterious ritual, sometimes humorous, sometimes ominous, this ongoing process is continuously producing new and unexpected connections.
